A: The spice sold as "chili powder" in most supermarkets across the country is actually a mixture of spices. The main ingredients are cumin and ground chili pepper. In the Southwest, the product called "chili powder" is just that _ ground-up mild to medium-hot dried red chilies. As the popularity of Southwestern cuisine spreads, more stores are carrying pure ground chili powder. It is often sold in bags in upscale grocery stores and some regular supermarkets.
