The first reported golf game in Hawaii was played in the mid1890s in a Manoa Valley pasture.

The first golf course was built on Samuel Mills Damon's estate in Moanalua Gardens in 1898. For the first three years, the Moanalua Golf Club had no membership fees or green fees because Damon wanted it to be open to the public. Then in 1901, his son, S. E. Damon, established fees, made it a semi-private membership club, and reduced the course to nine holes because, he told the Honolulu press, "the latter number is sufficient for a warm climate such as we have here."
