Denver Health and the University of Colorado have been awarded $5.9 million to examine why the heart disease rate among Hispanics is higher than expected.
Hispanics tend to have lower cholesterol rates than other groups, and Hispanics with diabetes aren't as prone to heart disease as others with diabetes are, said Dr. Edward Havarnek, cardiologist with Denver Health.
But the Hispanic death rate from heart disease, while lower than that for non-Hispanics, remains stubbornly high.
