In years past, archers avoided shooting a longbow if at all possible simply because shooting one meant enduring uncomfortable, if not bone jarring hand shock. Longbows were available only in lengths of around 68 to 72 inches, making them unwieldy for those who were shorter than average. To top all that off, early longbows also had a tendency to "stack", which means that as the bow was drawn, a point would be reached where the draw weight suddenly increased dramatically instead of two or three pounds per inch as it should have.
