The Iowa Territory was a dangerous, frontier area with thieves, gunmen and deadly land disputes.

In the middle of much of it was a Northern Kentucky man named John Chambers.

Chambers was born in Bromley Bridge, N.J., on Oct. 6, 1780, the son of Rowland Chambers, a veteran of the Revolutionary War and Phoebe Mullican Chambers of Long Island.

The family moved to Mason County in 1794, just two years after Kentucky became a state. He is believed to have received much of his early education from his parents, but he did spend some time at Transylvania Seminary in Lexington. Transylvania was organized in 1780, while Kentucky ...
