Oct. 13--CLAREMONT, Calif. -- In a controversial step toward creating an affordable place to live in pricey north Claremont, the city will buy a vacant lot it has been eyeing for a potential housing development.

After a heated back-and-forth between supporters and opponents of the land deal, the City Council decided Tuesday to buy the two-acre property at Base Line Road and Towne Avenue and pursue affordable housing options at the site.
