Last year at this time it looked like Ford Motor Co. would never launch the gasoline-electric version of the Ford Escape SUV.
I saw it as an extremely bad sign that Ford had failed to bring an Escape Hybrid to the prestigious Michelin Challenge Bibendum - a rally and show for green vehicles and technologies that attracts entries from the world's automakers.
The event last October in San Francisco drew hundreds of journalists from all over the world. I wrote at the time that Ford engineers couldn't get the bugs out of the Escape Hybrid and probably would never introduce the vehicle.
