Ben Gibbard is a refreshingly candid and plain-talking indie-rock star. But the frontman for Death Cab for Cutie clammed up and turned coy over one topic in an interview two weekends ago, when his band was in the midst of the Vote for Change tour with Pearl Jam.
The question was whether - after seven years developing its cultish fan base - Death Cab was considering a deal with a major record label. For all of its career, the brood-rock quintet has worked with small Seattle imprint Barsuk Records.
"I'm not supposed to talk about that," Gibbard said, "which should probably tell you what you want to know."
