When attending a symphony concert or opera, we often take the violin for granted; after all, there are two to three dozen violinists in a typical orchestra. But this marvelous instrument (which has been with us in various forms for over three centuries) can be at its most elegant and subtle when played solo, with piano or as part of a string quartet.
