Perfect Drift, the 2003 Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap champion, will attempt to defend his title in Saturday's $750,000 fall classic at Hawthorne Race Course.

The 68th running of the Gold Cup will have a field of seven runners for the 1 1/4-mile race on the main track.

The richest dirt race in Illinois has proven to be a good prep event for the Breeders' Cup. Several Gold Cup winners, including Black Tie Affair, Buck's Boy and Awesome Again, have won Breeders' Cup races.
