The sweet success of Eugene's Fenton & Lee Confections - a chocolate retailer founded 22 years ago that at one time was making sales in 45 states - has turned bitter.
The downtown chocolate manufacturer and retail shop, at 35 E. Eighth Ave., last Saturday closed the doors on the premises it leases, with no apparent plan to reopen.
Owner Dan Kaufman of Salem could not be reached for comment. Phone lines have been disconnected at his home and his Salem wholesale company, Northwest Chocolate Factory.
