Bellingham's rapid commercial expansion in the early 1900s provided many opportunities for employment in the building and construction industry. One of the many people taking advantage of this situation was James W. Macy, a young man from southwest Ohio who began his career as a local general contractor during this era.

Born in 1884 in Fidelity, Ohio, Macy learned stonemasonry and concrete work from his father and became independent at an early age. In 1905, with no family obligations, he joined a survey crew headed west to work on the Shoshone Reservation near Wind River, Wyoming.
