THE TOWN
Population: 650 in summer, 600 in winter.
Number of boats: Permanent, approximately 25 vessels, all members of the local fleet. Seasonally, up to 100 additional Bering Sea crab vessels use the harbor during winter crab fisheries for off-loading, shoreside services, crew changes, etc.
TOP FIVE SPECIES LANDED
Red king crab--With only a few processors, landing data is kept confidential; however, St. Paul facilities handle a substantial portion of the Bering Sea red king crab harvest, which in 2003 totaled up to 16 million pounds worth $80 million.
Opilio crab--St. Paul also handles much of the Bering Sea opilio harvest. ...
