Hoping to broaden the consumer market for salmon, San Diego's two big seafood companies will launch smoked salmon products in 2005.
Chicken of the Sea International and Bumble Bee Holdings will launch smoked salmon in a pouch products early next year, and use funding from Alaska to promote the product.
"Salmon is a trendy food and everybody wants to eat more of it," said Van Effner, Chicken of the Sea's director of marketing.
Alaska, where the vast majority of wild salmon is harvested, is so intent on helping consumers get hooked on the fish, it's spending $12 million on a diversified promotional and marketing campaign.
