Oct. 16--Shares of La Jolla Pharmaceutical swooned 61 percent yesterday as investors reacted to news that the company's experimental lupus drug won't be approved without another lengthy human study.
The San Diego biotechnology company had hoped the Food and Drug Administration would allow the drug, Riquent, onto the market while the company conducted a new clinical trial to confirm therapeutic benefits hinted at in an earlier, failed Phase 3 study.
But on Thursday the FDA sent La Jolla a letter stating that while the drug was "approvable," the company had ...
