AWAITING a friend I seek refuge from the rain courtesy of one of the titans of the turf. Ladbrokes on a damp autumn evening is a far cry from lobster on the lawn at Ascot.
The clientele are all male and many are clearly poor.
A row blows up over a [pounds sterling]20 note that had found its way on to the floor. One of the claimants has obviously been drinking, probably for years and years.
The other, laughing at him cruelly, waves the note in his face while telling him to go away in just about every way he can muster.
