ORLANDO, Fla. _ After a year of meetings in London, the worldwide Anglican Communion on Monday asked the Episcopal Church, its self-governing U.S. member, to apologize for consecrating an openly gay man as bishop of New Hampshire.
The commission appointed to study the church's position on homosexuality also called on the 50 U.S. bishops who participated in the consecration of the Rt. Rev. V. Gene Robinson not to elect any more gay bishops.
In a statement from London, the Rev. Frank Griswold, presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church would not say whether an apology would be forthcoming.
