SEATTLE _ Listening to Mike Hargrove speak and, more to the point, hearing the certainty with which he spoke gave a measure of insight into the reasons that Wednesday he was named the 13th manager in Mariners history.
He said all of the necessary things _ of a Seattle team in transition, of the need for hard work ahead, of conviction the job done right would lead to success for five and 10 years to come. And he said them with the assurance of a man four wins shy of becoming only the 50th manager with 1,000 big-league victories.
