ALTHOUGH it looks benign, Katla volcano should have erupted in 1988.

Sixteen years later, the local residents are still waiting nervously.

This piece of information would not normally cause too much alarm. However, for 15 minutes I waited anxiously at the summit, with just a diesel-powered snowmobile as my getaway, while our enthusiastic guide explained how volcanoes erupt.

Perhaps I shouldn't have been too concerned, as the volcano is buried deep beneath metres of thick ice underneath Myrdalsjokull glacier -- Iceland's southern-most, and fourth-largest glacier.

A snowmobile is just about the only way ...
