IN 1964, with proceeds from hits like "What'd I Say" and "Georgia on My Mind," Ray Charles built his studio and offices on Washington Boulevard at Western Avenue. "I liked the location," Charles told his biographer, David Ritz. "People were trying to tell me to move to fancier areas like Beverly Hills. But why? What was wrong with a working-class black neighborhood?" In April, two months before Charles's death, the City of Los Angeles declared the singer's headquarters a historical landmark.
