THE SACRIFICE FLY is a fairly mundane statistical category to most fans. However, it is interesting to note that those who make the rules have found it a lively topic, as shown by the many incarnations the rule has had. Before 1908 there had to be one out and a runner had to score for a batter to receive credit for a sacrifice fly. From 1908 to 1925 a sacrifice fly could be awarded when there was either zero or one out, but there had to be a runner scoring.
