Getting Started Launch your unit by asking your students to share what they already know about Columbus. They may be familiar with the basic tale: In 1492, Christopher Columbus "discovered" the Americas when he sailed across the Atlantic. Have a volunteer read the definition of discover from a dictionary. Then ask students: Did Columbus make a voyage of discovery? Why or why not? What other words might we use? Invite children to browse the books you have gathered (see "Books" on page 37), and then read aloud Peter Sis's Follow the Dream: The Story of Christopher Columbus, a good introductory text. After reading, start a "Columbus Exchange" chart like the one on page 37. ...
