For Tony La Russa, who has been regarded as one of the smartest and best-prepared managers in baseball since the 1980s, the World Series presents a unique challenge: devising a total game plan in less than 48 hours.
"It's going to be a real crash, hurry-up kind of thing," La Russa said late yesterday afternoon, shortly after his National League champion St. Louis Cardinals arrived at Fenway Park for a workout in advance of tonight's World Series opener against the Red Sox.
"It wasn't until (Thursday night) that we were in this thing, and we're playing (tonight). You know, we like trying to get ready."
