IT IS 4.45am and a red dawn is breaking over Sandakphu, a tiny Sherpa village 11,815ft up in the Himalayas. Against the stunning backdrop of Kanchendzonga, at 28,208ft the world's third-highest mountain, 41 frozen souls scramble out of their sleeping bags and go in search of their running shoes, thermals and a bowl of hot porridge.
Ahead lies a daunting 26-mile run to Rimbik, the so-called Mount Everest Challenge Marathon, which will test them to their physical and mental limits.
For some, it will mean a punishing 13 hours on their feet. For others, it will result in twisted ankles, painful blisters and tears of pain.
