A high percentage of hospital admissions derive from emergency department (ED) visits. To appropriately allocate resources for the care of patients admitted through the ED, hospitals need to understand which types of conditions prompting ED visits are most likely to result in admission to the hospital. An effective approach is to analyze individual DRGs, comparing the volume of patients admitted through the ED with the total volume of patients admitted.
Such an analysis should start by looking at those DRGs that, according to national data, are associated with the largest portion of the total volume of patients who are admitted to hospitals through EDs. An ...
