African-American women are having fewer children and breast-feeding less. These trends may translate to escalating rates of breast cancer in the African-American community, say University of Southern California researchers.
Overall, African-American women have a lower risk of breast cancer than white women. But breast cancer cases among black women are likely to accelerate if current birth and breast-feeding patterns continue, the researchers suggest.
In general, the risk of developing breast cancer declines the more children a woman has and as she spends more time breast-feeding. Among black women, each pregnancy dropped breast-cancer risk by 10% among ...
