ALLORCA, Spain The Philippines, playing without GM Joey Antonio for the second straight day, rejoined the elite ranks following its stirring 3.5-0.5 rout of neighboring Indonesia Saturday in the eighth round of the World Chess Olympiad.
Grandmaster Eugene Torre, International Master Mark Paragua and rookie Darwin Laylo hammered separate opponents while IM Jayson Gonzales settled for a draw as the Filipinos climbed to a share of 15th place with 19.5 points.
The huge win, however, placed the Philippines in a collision course with ninth-ranked Azerbaijan, a youth-laden team led by super GM Teimour Radjabov (2663) Sunday.
