An Elgin man is bringing his highly coveted weightlifting championships home Sunday.
Joe Mukite, 38, founded the power lifting organization BenchAmerica two years ago to unify the sport in America, and it quickly developed into a worldwide competition with high regard in the field, he said.
Mukite, who grew up in Elgin, started lifting at an early age and won several titles, he said. But he found that several competitions had different regulations, and he wanted one with a structured set of rules, with a chance to bring notoriety to the sport.
