ST. LOUIS - When it rains, there are leaks everywhere in Busch Stadium. The Cardinals' home field is in its final days, and preventive maintenance isn't a concern.
St. Louis is building a fancy new park nearby, expected (OK, hoped) to be completed for the 2006 season. Busch Stadium will die at the relatively young age of 40, having opened in 1966.
Busch was one of the first of its kind, and will be one of the last of its kind. When it meets the wrecker's ball, Shea Stadium will be the last of the round, "multi-purpose," symmetrical stadiums built in the '60s and early '70s still in use by a major league or NFL team.
