Oct. 27--The Chicago Transit Authority began mailing more than 1,000 layoff letters Tuesday as the agency starts preparing for the possibility of draconian budget cuts.
"It's a sad day," declared Ethel Carter, president of Local 308 of the Amalgamated Transit Union, which represents CTA rail workers.
The transit authority plans to lobby for more funding in Springfield during the General Assembly's upcoming veto session, but the layoff notices are not part of a strategy to pressure legislators for more money, said agency spokeswoman Noelle Gaffney.
