Oct. 27--ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- It's clear that states can make a lot of money taxing slot machines played at parimutuel outlets. Profit from state-regulated racinos such as those in West Virginia, where machines at four racetracks generated $384 million in taxes last year, have led several states to approve slot- machine-style gaming for horse and greyhound tracks.
New York and Pennsylvania are among the most recent.
