ST. LOUIS _ The World Series victory should be considered a triumph for all the Boston Red Sox players and managers who tried and failed over the previous 86 years. Call it cosmic closure for almost a century of bad karma.

We'll call it a victory for first baseman Dick Stuart, Dr. Strangeglove, who once got a standing ovation at Fenway Park for successfully picking up a hot-dog wrapper.

It was for catcher Bob Tillman, who drilled a pitcher in the forehead while attempting to throw to second base.

It was for Gene Conley, a giant of a pitcher who jumped the team during a road trip and hopped a plane to Israel.
