The investments plan for the expansion of the railroad network in Brazil has been approved by the Lula government administration. According to the Minister of Transportation, Alfredo Nascimento, the project involves four vital works: Ferrovia Norte-Sul; Transnordestina; expansion of the Ferrovia Vitoria-Minas and the new line of Brasil Ferrovias at the Port of Santos. Nascimento expects to begin in January 2005 the construction of two stretches of the Ferrovia Norte-Sul aimed at encouraging the use of the Port of Itaqui (Maranhao) to reduce the movement at traditional ports.
