Kansas Gas and Electric Co. and Kansas Power and Light Co. made their merger official last week, now that an unsettling "bang" at a nuclear plant partially owned by KG&E has been explained.
Originally slated to be consummated March 16, the merger was stalled after a noise described by Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corp. as a "bang" was heard on two occasions when the Wolf Creek nuclear plant was being cranked up to full power (TER 3/23, p. 214).
The bang turned out to be the result of thermal expansion of some piping in the containment building that houses the Wolf Creek pressurized water reactor. Wolf Creek spokesperson Ronn Smith said there was ...
