MANCHESTER United chief executive David Gill dealt a huge blow to Malcolm Glazer's ambitions of taking control at Old Trafford. He issued a curt Stock Exchange announcement breaking off [pounds sterling]800m takeover negotiations with the American tycoon.
The two parties have been in talks since September 27, much to the chagrin of the football club's devoted fans. News that negotiations were over made it a double celebration for them - it was a little over 12 hours since ManU had ended Arsenal's 49-game unbeaten run at the club's ground.
