South Africa's major chemical companies are pushing the Chemical Manufacturers' Association (CMA; Johannesburg) to adopt Responsible Care immediately. "It's no secret that the public, or at least its more affluent members, has lost faith in most industry here. For the chemical industry, Responsible Care is the best way to start recovering that faith," says Bob Fogel, group manager/safety, health, and environment at AECI (Johannesburg), and chairman of the CMA's chemical industry environmental forum. If the effort fails, "we know the government could respond with draconian environmental legislation," Fogel adds.
