WHETHER EARLIER CIVILIZATIONS HAD IT EASIER IS debatable, but a certain primitive simplicity found in objects from bygone ages resurfaces at the forefront of design. Unadorned, pure lines take cues from both the primordial and the modern, resulting in stark austerity. Rich, dark wood finishes are punctuated by flashes of glinting metal; overall, the palette remains deeply neutral. Not for the soft of heart, this look is on the severe side, but it is also visually arresting and uncannily familiar in the way that only truly old things can be.
