Barbara Saleton and Patty Nast Canton dreaded their father's profession. He spent his days designing hand-embroidered sports shirts. "We were really embarrassed that our father was in the bowling shirt business. We thought, 'couldn't dad do something better than this?" said Canton.
Their father founded Nat Nast Co. amidst heightened American patriotism after World War II. The company grew during the 1950s and '60s, but hit a wall when the popularity of bowling faded. After a name change and selling caps and shirts with college embroidered logos, the company was eventually sold.
