On a spring afternoon a little over 25 years ago, a San Diego bartender borrowed a newspaper guy's pen, reached for a napkin and scratched out a contract that read as follows: "I, Bill Walton, agree to play for the San Diego Clippers over the next five seasons for a wage of $1 million per."
He then dated the napkin, left a space for Walton's signature and asked, "What do you think?"
Walton, a pending free agent with a stress fracture in his left foot who'd grown up 15 miles from the saloon, had been inactive throughout the entire campaign that was, at that point, deep into its playoffs. In fact, ...
