In addition to preventing rickets, vitamin D has recently been found to be protective against many other conditions including breast cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, arthritis, and depression. Vitamin D can be synthesized in the skin with sun exposure, but using sun-block with an SPF of greater than 10 prevents vitamin D synthesis from occurring. Dietary sources, such as butter, egg yolks, and cream, have some natural vitamin [D.sub.3]; but most vitamin D is found in fortified foods, especially dairy products, in the form of synthetic vitamin [D.sub.2].
