When brothers Larry and Ned Lakeman took their 75' carrier April Gale to Wallace Marine Services in Thomaston, Maine, for extensive work on the port bulwarks in October 1990, they already knew they needed a new boat.
They had two others, but only one of the three, the 50' seiner P. Bo II, had a fish hold, and she was 30 years old and showing her years. With an ongoing contract to supply pogies to Russian processing ships, a boat was needed that had ample carrying capacity and would stand up to the punishment of offloading next to a steel-hulled factory ship. In addition, any new boat would have to be able to shrimp in the winter and seine for herring.
