Nov. 5--TOKYO -- Japan Airlines Corp. said Friday it swung into the black, with a group net profit of 82.96 billion yen, in the first half of the current fiscal year, compared with a loss of 57.59 billion yen a year earlier.

JAL attributed the result to diminishing adverse effects of the outbreak in Asia of severe acute respiratory syndrome and other unfavorable business environments as well as stepped-up marketing of flight services to tourists to Asian destinations such as China, Thailand and Bali. It also cited higher unit fares for domestic flights.
