The Royal Ballet
Sylvia
Royal Opera House, London
There are few things in life as exciting as a risk that pays off. The Royal Ballet's gorgeous new production of Frederick Ashton's Sylvia is one of them.
You wouldn't have put good money on it. First performed in 1952, Sylvia was revived and revised over the next 15 years, but it hasn't been seen since.
The choreography lacks overt drama, eroticism or virtuosity and the plot is a wafer-thin mythological fantasy.
