IN ITS 6TH 'SPOTLIGHT ON BUSINESS' report for 2003, the Environment Agency noted a rise of 5% in greenhouse gas emissions from regulated installations. The increase was largely as a result of greater output from power stations. The number of days of moderate or high air pollution also rose.
The Agency also reports that it took legal action against 266 companies during the year with fines from successful prosecutions totalling 2.23m [pounds sterling]. Average fines actually fell slightly to 8,412 [pounds sterling] but there were also some notably heavy penalties, including 250,000 [pounds sterling] for Cleansing Service Group, 100,000 [pounds sterling] for Eurocare ...
