Peru's Callao port handled 553,000 containers (13,544 m tons and about 2,461 vessels) in 2003. According to Carlos Vargas Loret de Mola, president of Asppor, the Peruvian association of port operators, if the necessary investments are made, the Callao port would be able to increase the handling of containers, cargo volume and number of vessels by 12.7%, 5.7% and 3% a year over the next few years, respectively.
