Everyone has heard of Rembrandt, but mention his Amsterdam contemporary Bartholomeus Breenbergh and you are likely to draw a blank with most people.
In fact, it is unlikely that Breenbergh would have been a priority for the latest in the Barber Institute's series of picture-in-focus exhibitions but for the fact that the Barber happens to own what director Richard Verdi thinks is probably the finest single work by him, Joseph distributing corn in Egypt. Or, perhaps more accurately, one of the two finest single works by him.
