THE far-north fellow painted on the tails of Alaska Airlinesslump in air travel and a bitter fares war, Alaska Airlines appeared to be bucking the trend. Flying up and down the west coast, from Prudhoe Bay in Alaska to Mazatlan, Mexico, the airline has reported 19 consecutive profitable years; including last year when it made a $10.3m net profit on revenues of $1.1 billion. But on June 26th, Raymond Vecci, Alaska's chief executive, announced a series of economies. This year the airline will be hard-pressed to make a profit.
Based in Seattle, Alaska Airlines has 65 aircraft and carried 5.8m passengers last year. That would make it a relatively big airline in some ...
