If you're looking for a surprise team to contend with the Hockey East superpowers this season, you could do worse than UMass-Lowell. The River Hawks, picked to finish fifth in the preseason coaches' poll, have hovered in the top 15 nationally through the opening weeks of the season.
Coach Blaise MacDonald has a solid cast, led by forwards Andrew Martin, Elias Godoy, Ben Walter, Mark Pandolfo and tempo-setter Danny O'Brien. Walter notched four goals in Lowell's 5-3 win at RPI and added the game-winner in a 3-2 overtime victory against Union.
