Hampton Roads boasts a maritime history second to none in the nation, but few realize that the area also has a number of historic forts and other land-based encampments that date back to the 1500 s.
History buffs can get a quick review of the ring of fortifications that once protected Hampton Roads , thanks to the Web site http://www.geocities.com/naforts/varoads.html, complete with a locator map. The site was compiled by brothers Phil Payette of Virginia Beach and Pete Payette of Orange County. They also created the American Forts Network.
