Picture man: Matisse at Villa Le Reve is a wonderfully evocative little book of mostly black-and-white snaps taken by Helene Adant. They show the painter in his old age, still working, during a five-year spell at the villa near Vence in the South of France. The photographs also show the scenes he painted: the view through an open French window, curly-legged and plumped-up chairs, displays of fruit, textiles and bric-a-brac - all opposite the exuberant images they inspired.
Matisse at Villa Le Reve: 1943-1948, by Marie-France Boyer (Thames & Hudson, [pounds sterling]13.57).
